The happenings in Europe over the past week have been sad and shocking.

We’ve received a few queries from clients as to how this is impacting balances.

At the moment, the answer is not a lot.

There was some fearful drawdown last Thursday, but the market so far seems to be digesting this as a localised conflict that will not have huge impact on most businesses in Western markets. At least for the time being.

Let’s hope and pray that somehow a peaceful outcome can be reached. Claims that the current world order is under threat and some sort of Armageddon may be upon us are not helpful.

The sun rises. Businesses open. Life goes on.

Over the past 5 days, here’s how the FTSE — the main European market in which we buy — has fared:

For clients with funds, we bought on Thursday. Some of those positions are now up over 5%.

Further, our strategy is defensive with significant holdings in necessary businesses like National Grid [LSE:NG.].

Overall, for the month of February 2022, we were up 1.11% across the composite portfolio (total aggregate return across all portfolios following the strategy).

If we can annualise this across the year, we would be up 16.65% since the start of the year.

Of course, we only have 2 months of this year to calculate from. The year is still very young, and anything could happen.

We don’t know what will happen in Europe.

There could be more fear as this horrible situation rages on. Or gets worse. Or we can be optimistic and see a resolution.

If there can be a resolution, that will open up more market growth. There is still a lot of money sitting on the sidelines.
