Since 1987, August has consistently been one of the worst months in the global markets.

Why? Various theories abound, but my view is that it’s a combination of much of the northern hemisphere being on summer holiday and fatigue as the financial year reaches its ‘Wednesday’.

Some years living in apparently one of the sunniest locations in the British Isles also reminds me that the summer there is short. The soft tops on the cars come down for a few days. The bikinis flash on the beaches. Then they are gone.

So, in August, the attractions of the trading screen do tend to dim.

August has largely been flat, then down for us. Delta, China’s slowdown, and the bikinis mentioned may have all distracted the market from the longer-term recovery picture it had before.

Overall, for the month of August, we were down –0.53% across the composite portfolio (total aggregate return across all portfolios following the strategy). And we are up 12.51% since the start of the year.

Please see our performance chart for more details.

September is the other poor month, typically in global markets. But we need some drawdown to buy for the long-run, and prices have been high.

We are scavengers of good value companies and remain on the hunt for opportunity.
