In the 1930s, researchers launched an experiment that has since become controversial.

The study followed 15 infants across 36,000 meals, for two full years.

Why infants? Because unlike adults, infants are not yet swayed by culture, trends, or social pressure. They eat without bias.

At each meal, the setup was the same: a table of unprocessed foods laid out before the children. No instructions. No guidance. Just careful observation of what they chose to eat and drink.

The kind of experiment that would not be allowed today in our modern safety state. How dare we let infants do what they want and not interfere?

And the results that this study found were remarkable.

They found that each child naturally balanced their diet across the foods on offer, and their instinctive mix gave them the right amount of micronutrients they needed, kept them at a healthy weight, improved their biomarkers, and in some cases, resolved pre-existing medical conditions altogether.

The findings were quite simplistic, really:

  • Humans have innate drives that regulate what we need to consume for our cells to obtain the right amount and balance of energy.
  • Whole foods are foods that our body understands and can digest easily. This means that when consuming only whole foods, we can better rely on our body to guide us to obtain the precise amount of each nutrient we need.

But to firms in the food industry, understanding human biology and leveraging this knowledge has been a key to increasing sales.

Because, simply put, firms want to sell more of their products. And to sell more of their products, they need one or both of the following:

  • New customers to sell to.
  • Existing customers to consume more…
