How to Protect Your Assets Now and When You are Gone

You have worked hard for everything you have. Or perhaps you were the lucky recipient of generational wealth. Regardless, you do not want your assets to go unprotected while you are on this earth or after you leave it. The only way to make that happen is to take action and protect what you have. Continue reading to learn some action items you can easily move on starting today.

Create Essential Legal Documents

Having a legal will should be non-negotiable for everyone. If you do not have one, it is time to schedule an appointment with your will lawyers. If you have one already, but you had it drafted quite a while ago, and your circumstances have changed, in other words, there has been a birth, death, marriage, divorce, or any other impactful occurrence that may have happened, then you need to update your will right away.

A will gives you agency to make decisions regarding your assets even after you are no longer among the living. A will is vital for everyone, but especially so if you have high-value wealth and assets. In addition, the act of creating a will allows you to name a trusted person to care for your children if you pass away before they reach adulthood. These are decisions you do not want to leave to the government or your family, especially if it will become contentious.

Have the Hard Conversation

Most people will run away from a conversation regarding their mortality or yours. Understandably, this is a very touchy subject. Unfortunately, there is a certain finality to life that everyone knows about. And yet, no one wants to talk about it. Gather your loved ones and trusted advisors together. Include only the people with whom you want to share this important information. Perhaps these conversations would be better off in one-on-one settings instead of a large gathering. You decide what works best for you.

Talk with your people about your end-of-life plans. Include information on your funeral service, etc. If you would rather not go into details, simply inform them of where the essential information is stored. Let everyone know who your executor is and where your will and other important paperwork are located. At the very least, the executor should have this information.

Talk through bequests if you are interested in asking who would like specific personal possessions of yours. Ensure that everyone understands what is happening with your assets so you can avoid the heartache of arguing and anger when your passing should be a time of mourning and the celebration of your life.

Life has its ups and downs. It is hard sometimes. Make your life and that of everyone around you easier by scheduling an appointment right away to draft a will that aligns with your values and clearly states your desires and intentions for your assets and anything else you value. Protect what you love. Having the difficult conversations now will save everyone and spare a lot of hurt feelings later on.
